Have you ever struggled mightily and succeeded? Describe what you have felt at the glorious moment of victory? What does a winner feel?
My world revolves around basketball. From the moment I started playing in ninth grade, it has always felt magical to have the ball in my hands. Falling in love with the game was easy, the struggle to become better is the harder part. When I wake up in the mornings and practice, I feel as though what I do is too little to matter, but I work at it anyway. “A whole lot of littles make a whole lot of lots” – Stevie Wonder. It is the moment of victory that reminds me that hard work really does pay off.
Having faced defeat in Win Mumby, our school’s annual tournament, in ninth grade, I did not want to let my teammates down again. The loss we faced made me work even harder, and I was determined not to let my team lose again.
A year later, when the moment finally came for the Win Mumby tournament, I was ready. The first few games were quite easy, it was the thought of playing the finals that was making me nervous. Having beaten our rival team in the semi-finals, I was pumped up.
When the final game finished with a blaring of the referee’s whistle, I felt as though something weird was happening to my stomach. My prayers before the game had been answered. We were the champions. The tears were just uncontrollable, and I pointed to the sky, to the one who answered my prayers. All the months of practicing had finally paid off. As a winner, I felt the feeling of humility.
